Often an outdoor large-scale railroad becomes the major event of the yard. You may limit it to a few loops off in the corner or make it a main attraction. Some very nice layouts wander through the landscape instead of dominating it. If your family can enjoy using the area with the railroad present, then you have used the right space. You may want to plan using your spaces in stages instead of trying one large space.
